Independent Verification and Validation (IV & V) is an external process to determine requirement fulfillment and verify expected performance. During IV &V, verification is the process of ensuring the accuracy of project based on written specifications and requirements while validation is certification at the end of the audit trail or review that states these findings. These findings are completely independent and have no stake in the success or failure of the project.
The IV & V activity is linked to fundamental processes such as Quality Assurance and control, Configuration Management and Risk Management. Hence the IV & V team performs major risk-mitigation activities that the customer uses to ensure the expected services are provided and products work as required.
